The conference

“It’s a great time to be a UX Designer”
An Event Apart Austin
July 2013

Jared Spool said : there’s never been a better time to be a designer. Design is about intention. We can decide to innovate or immitate. Some people prefer to take the immitation way, and that’s such intelligent because it decreases risks and it’s cheaper. Others prefer “Innovation”, but it costs, it’s totaly unknown. You can decide to make something new but you can be wrong. It’s why lots of people are immitating most of the time. Take Apple and Samsung for example, they went wrong to each other because samsung made some phones who be similar with Apple’s phones. But Apple has something completely different about others. it’s interactive, it’s intentional. All about Design. A simple example is” after sales services”. In many shops, you have to queue a long time before getting help. For Apple, you just have to phone, make an appointment, bring your phone back, and it’s all.

Design is also about strategy, competition. Many companies wanna take part of it and now designers became realy important. Design is a way to business. Business is a sucess that values designers. Business is intentional design Lets take an example : a design who be ugly but effective is just better than a design who be wonderfull but less effective. Zipcar avis, hertz are some website who have a realy easy access. But innovation has nothing to see with invention. It’s about adding values. We have to change experience, experience of design. That’s important. Intention as said on top is the key of design’s experience Let’s take an other good example : Cirque du soleil. They took an old business who was about to die. They removed animals and they engaged some good dancers with nice music to build an other ambiance. It worked very well, it was a brillant idea. They have reinvest in something new that nobody have done before. They have totaly reinvented the experience of design. Milton Glaser said : “I move things around until it looks good”

To sump up

Design can take many ways. Everything is criticism, a bad idea is in fact a great design idea. The best way to have a good experience of design and to become a UX Designer is organisation, stuff, easy access, making the life easier, find solution in what we realy need, moving forward, having feedbacks from users, learn about what we did wrong. Designers are compartmentalists because they are good in a special area.

But the most important for a UX Designer is to be a storyteller and a Unicorn. Being a unicorn is very difficult, it seems rarely. But 5 steps can make someone a unicorn. Learn about something, train, experimentation, doing it again with what you know from other steps and tell it to someone else.
